Samsung Galaxy Note 2 Officially Released At IFA In Berlin
« on: August 30, 2012, 10:22:58 AM »

Well yesterday was a big day for all us Galaxy Note fans.   As you surely know by now Samsung officially unveiled the Galaxy Note II, the sequel to their best selling (10,000,000+) original 5.3 inch Galaxy Note 'Phablet'.   Sporting an upgraded processor, a gorgeous 1280 x 720 Super Amoled HD display,  2GB, improved 1024 levels of pressure sensitivity,  of ram in a thinner albeit slightly longer body than the original the new Galaxy Note 2 is definitely a device worth waiting for.  The S-Pen also has been nicely upgraded with a heftier feel, rubber tip to give a more 'paper-like' writing feel and it's slightly longer to boot making it easier to hold.

Now while the hardware upgrades are certainly nice what most impressed myself and much of the tech press were the software improvements.   Samsung has really refined and extended the S-Pen integration that they started with last year's model and added a lot of new and useful functionality.   To start there's 'AirView' and 'Pop Up Note'.   With 'AirView' you can hold the S-Pen over any of several types of information on your Galaxy Note's screen and it will preview what is in it without you having to open it up.   So if you hover over the icon for the S Planner it would show you the events for that day or if you hover over a video it will play a brief clip etc.   Same goes for documents and photos and more.

Now 'Pop Up Note' is a cool feature that pops a small S-note pad onto the screen as soon as you take the S-Pen out of it's dedicated slot.   This is great because it let's you take down a note if you're on the phone or concentrating on someone talking or reading and you don't have to start hunting for the notepad app.   You can just start writing without distraction.    Another cool feature of the new S-Pen integration is the ability of the Galaxy Note II to know if you're leaving the S-Pen behind.   Because of the accelerometer built in to the S-Pen and the device's intelligent S-Pen slot, it'll warn you that you're leaving your S-Pen behind before you get too far.  Pretty cool!

Now as we mentioned previously the new Galaxy Note II will be available in both Titanium Grey and Marble White and will be available internationally before the year's out.   There's tons more to discuss and show on the new Galaxy Note II and we'll be posting videos and delving deeper into Samsung's new crown jewel soon enough.  In the meantime you can see a chart below comparing the hardware specs of the new Galaxy Note II with the original.
