Max volume from headphone jack really really low
« on: December 11, 2014, 07:43:58 AM »
Hi all.

I just defected from iPhone 6 Plus to a Galaxy Note 4.  Almost everything about the Note 4 is better, except for one thing; the max volume on the headphone jack.  It's so much lower than my 160gb iPod Classic and my iPhone 5 which I still have. So much so that it looks like I'll be hanging on to my apple devices a little longer.

And yes I've gone past the max line and into the red zone already, which btw is really annoying being nagged by that every time I want to turn the volume up.

I even purchased PowerAmp player to boost it up even more but compared to my iPhones it's still unsatisfactorily low. Has anyone else noticed this?

Have you tried listening to another note 4 to see if there's a difference in max volume?

Yes I have. A friend of mine got a Note 4 the same time I did. Same problem for him also.

I wonder if it's an andriod thing which other android users don't realise how low it actually is. The max volume for my Note 4 is about the same as my iPod classic at the half way mark.

The only way around it seems to be powered headphones with thier own volume like a Bluetooth headset or perhaps there are firmware hacks with a rooted phone?

Yes same problem here. When connecting to my car stereo tru the AUX I would go for maximum volume on my note 4, and adjust the volume I wanna hear from my car stereo. Which kinda sucks really, but doesn't really stop me from listening to my Spotify. Wished they had a way around this without ever rooting.

Had my S3 rooted and I found a mod to have the max volume way higher than stock though. But I don't wanna root my note 4. Any solution to this would be most welcome. Thanks.

The only other workaround I've found so far is a good set of Bluetooth headphones.  I just got a pair of JayBird BlueBuds x. They boost the volume up to the standard max volume I would expect from a smartphone.

Same problem here, but I have plenty of available workarounds so it's hardly a deal-breaker.  For example, I also have a Note 10.1 Tablet and the sound output is much louder and with apps like Spotify and Bubble UPnP, I can use my phone simply as a remote to control the interface while the Tablet is connected to the listening device.  I also have a lot of pro audio gear including small mixers, pre-amps, powered studio monitors, loudspeakers as well as home theater equipment so in most situations I am able amplify the signal beyond the limit anyone would ever want (or could tolerate) without any distortion.  If I am on the go and additional equipment is not an option, sometimes I will enable the "sound booster" on my equilizer app (paid version) which does give a decent boost to the overall output level.

Hope this helps!

I also have a Note 10.1 tablet, and I like to watch movies with mine. The sound wasn't quite as loud as I wanted it to be so I purchased an app called speaker booster. It added about 40% to my volume levels without distortion. During action scenes I have to turn the volume down to about half because it's so loud.

I've had no problem with the max volume on my note 4.  Try turning off Power saving mode.  Also try Skull Candy headphones.  They're high quality and noise cancelling.  Sometimes with the skull candy my Note 4's max volume is TOO loud.  Hope this helps someone.

You can also use the built-in equalizer or other apps to boost volume.  I agree with GeddesPhoto...not a deal breaker at all.  Love my Note 4
